How to recognize an original MCM bag
Especially in the last few years, when the brand has regained popularity, there are again several plagiarisms of the famous MCM bag on the market. But to avoid fake purchases we have summarized the most important features for you.
Check the label on your MCM bag
The MCM sign is considered an important authenticity feature and can expose some plagiarism through small but important details. Only a few bags and accessories do not have this characteristic brass sign. It is rectangular, has rounded corners and the original MCM lettering always runs in double lines. Under the lettering is the emblem with the typical laurel branch with a bow. Here it is worth a closer look, because original products always have exactly nine leaves on the left side of the bow, while there are only eight leaves on the right. If this characteristic does not match, it is most likely not a real MCM bag.
Below the laurels, there is usually a centered “R” and again below it the writing “MUNICH”. Here, too, your eagle eye is needed, because the dots of the “Ü” are always placed above the “M” on original products. The writing on the brass plate is, if outside, never blackened in its original state. If your bag has blackened lettering, this can be a clear indication of a fake. The engraved code, which is usually at the bottom of the plate, usually consists of one letter and four digits, but on vintage models, the code may only consist of a combination of digits. The MCM sign is almost always fastened with screws. Also, make sure that the screws are countersunk and do not protrude. With newer models, it is also possible that the sign is not fixed with screws but with a kind of rivets.
Look closely at the pattern and the monogram
Of course, original MCM bags are handmade and therefore produced with the highest quality. Therefore, pay attention to the transitions of the monograms. Many fakes lack a seamless transition of the pattern. With original products, on the other hand, the monograms always run perfectly and the transition fits perfectly with the previous course. Also, take a closer look at the seams. These should always be neatly finished and have the same distance from the edge.
Pay attention to the handles and metal applications
Usually, the hangers of an MCM bag, to which the handles are attached, always have the shape of an “H”. The crossbar of the handle hanger not in the shape of an “H”, but the shape of the “H” is usually the MCM logo. Since 2014, however, bags have also been produced in the shape of an “O”. Here the logo was engraved vertically into the hanger. Also, pay attention to the different metal applications of the bag. Models with shoulder strap almost always have the MCM logo engraved on the adjustment buckle.
Take a look at the warranty card
To protect itself against counterfeiting, MCM, like many other labels, has created a warranty card. When you buy an original product, you will always receive this card automatically. The card is handed out together with care instructions in a black envelope with the MCM logo. On the card, you will find among other things the product number of the article.
